From the explosive energy of Kickboxing to the smooth Latin rhythms of Zumba, Active Somerset funding is bringing brand new, affordable exercise classes to South Somerset.
-
The Active Somerset project has funding to set up 18 new exercise classes from March 2011 to March 2012.
-
Some classes are up and running already, like 'Learn to Kickbox' at the Markwick Centre in Yeovil - ideal for beginners and those new to exercise. Check out the events listings or the 'Yeovil Health' group for more information.
The district council's Healthy Lifestyles team is encouraging any community groups and clubs interested in setting up an exercise class to get in touch, as Active Somerset funding is still available.
Healthy Lifestyles Officer Charlie Coward explains: "Currently, the population of South Somerset do not do enough activity to benefit their health.
"Guidance from the Chief Medical Officer suggests that, as adults, we should be doing 150 minutes of physical activity a week. Active Somerset is a county-wide project that aims to get the people of Somerset more active.
"The aim is for the funding to act as a springboard to set up classes and for them to become sustainable when the funding has run out.
For example, in partnership with Age UK we have set up Yoga classes for people aged over 50 at Tatworth and Forton Health and Wellbeing Centre. This course continues to successfully run in Tatworth Memorial Hall without the funding."
At the Markwick Centre in Yeovil, South Somerset Mind is gearing up for the start of a 12 week beginners Kick boxing course.
Gill Norton, Volunteer Coordinator at South Somerset Mind says: "The course is open to anyone over 18 years old. Our aim is for people to come along, learn a new skill and improve their physical and emotional wellbeing through participation in regular physical activity."
Do you know of, or are you part of a community group or club that would be interested in accessing Active Somerset funding?
