So now they say David Laws is guilty of breaking SIX laws, above and beyond the initial rent claims. I've always stood up for Laws in the past because he's been good for Yeovil and seems like a true gent - looks like I was wrong. Sadly, Laws has proved he's no different than the rest of the disgraced MP's, and any sympathy I felt for him in trying to conceal his sexuality has vanished now that it turns out he just used that as an excuse. I think he should resign as our MP, what does everyone else think?

I think you'll find that the Standards & Priveleges Comittee stressed that Laws never intended to benefit himself or his partner, they accept the whole mess was purely born of his wish to keep his sexuality private. David is not a bad person, but one troubled by his private life. Unfortunately, I think this latest saga signals an end to Laws' hopes of getting back into government. Yeovil supports you David.

I'm not sure Darth_V if this is what you meant by resending my tweet to the originator site re David Laws as I'm new to all this tech stuff?

Anyhow essentially my comment was that there are 613 laws in the Old Testament so when considering comments like David Laws has broken SIX laws with regard to his claims I think it is important to put into context that most of us have probably broken far more laws in our life times with out even realising it. Interestingly these laws from the Bible were used orignally as a basis to formulate civil law hundreds of years ago in this country as the accepted moral code.

Interesting point - but what does the Old Testament say about co-habiting with a gay partner? I'm pretty sure that's not allowed, so I'm not sure how relevant the Old Testament is as a basis for moral code in 2011.

I fully support David Laws in his role as Yeovil MP. Personally I think he has done a fantastic job and think it is a real shame that he has had to step back from a more frontline role in Goverment. In mentioning earlier about the 613 laws in the Old Testament, my intention was not to get embroiled about whether I personally agree with those laws or the many revisons made to them over hundreds, if not thousands of years, as civil and criminal law in this country has been modified and remodified; but was simply attempting to convey the accepted belief by many that it is impossible to keep so many 'laws' as no one is perfect. We all need grace and mercy. Therefore speaking as one of those imperfect persons myself, I would hope that we could extend compassion and forgiveness in our hearts towards others who are truely regretful of their actions when found to be in error. When the expenses news first broke David Laws was very close to standing down not only from Goverment but as an MP too. I'm personally glad didn't.

MP's are required to carry out their roles as representatives of their constituencies in line with the rules that guide their job - if they stray from those rules, for whatever reason, they should be punished. If it was me who had carried out what is effectively a huge fraud then I would be behind bars. I respect David Laws, but if we are to reform the corrupt, out of date way MP's run the country then we should throw the book at anyone who continues to abuse positions of power. I agree no-one is perfect, we all break laws - and thus should accept due punishment.
