70 years ago in the skies above England a battle was taking place. During those dark days of World War 2 many young men lost their life in their determination to keep this country free from Nazi invasion. Let us not forget their scarifice. Also give credit to all those that took part in that important major battle. Including those in the factories making the weapons needed to defeat the Nazi's. Westland were producing fixed wing aircraft for the Royal Navy, Army Air Corp, and the RAF. During the war they made a large number of spitfires, but their most popular plane was the Lysander, which was used to drop our spies into occupied France. During the Battle of Britain, the Westland airfield was bombed in July 1940, the Nazi planes then went on to bomb the Royal Naval Air Station. Westland and the Navy Air base were targeted on other occasions too. Many bombs actually falling short of hitting Westland and landed on homes and businesses in the town. But it thanks to the bravery and hard work of the people that allows us the freedom we have today.

I know where Burger King is was a bomb site, use to be Boots. A mother and daughter were blown from a top floor flat when the building was hit by high explosive. They landed on the high street amongst rubble. They survived with just cuts and bruises. And next to the Woolworth building use to be Burtons that also received a direct hit. Trapping people in the basement who had taken shelter there part of the woolworth building came down also. I always find these facts interesting. Especially when you think Yeovil was a lot smaller then. So these air raids must have been quite a shock and quite scary.

Wow that's interesting. I guess Yeovil played its part in the war and paid the price just like any other place. Thanks again!
