A Yeovil school is taking part in an attempt to break world record for the most people singing and singing simultaneously.

Pupils at Pen Mill Infant and Nursery Academy on St Michael's Avenue are participating in this ginormous fundraising event, organized by the SignHealth charity for deaf people.

Earlier this year SignHealth organized a sign2sing record breaking event involving 114,277 children, including some pupils from Yeovil schools. They smashed the record then and are hoping to do even better this year.

Next year's sign2sing record breaking attempt will take place on 6 February 2013.

Steve Powell, Chief Executive at SignHealth, which is the national healthcare charity for deaf people, said: "Our Guinness World Records sign2sing project is an attempt to break the world record for the most people singing and signing a song at the same time.

"More than 800 schools have signed up so far and we're delighted Pen Mill Infant and Nursery Academy is involved in the event too."

This will be the charity's third sign2sing event and the charity is hoping that over 175,000 youngsters from schools, colleges and nurseries across the countries will join in.

Teachers involved in the event will have access to digital resources developed by SignHealth encouraging children to learn about sign language from the cheeky fictional character Olli the monkey.

Steve added: "The digital resources are available to all schools that register for sign2sing and include a free whiteboard app.

"sign2sing is all about communication and the app will make it easy for teachers to teach the signs and song in an engaging way."

On Wednesday, February 6, 2013 young people from all over the country and overseas will sign a song, entitled 'sign2sing', which has been composed especially for the event.

The world record attempt is primarily aimed at four to 11-year-olds, however other younger and older children and adults can join in if they wish.

Steve continued: "Any schools in Yeovil that decide to take part will be joining hundreds of schools all over the country and some in other countries at GMT 2.45pm on Wednesday, February 6 when they attempt to break the world record."

sign2sing is a fundraiser for SignHealth through a suggested £1 donation from everyone taking part.

The money raised from the event will be used to continue the charity's work helping to improve the mental and physical health and well-being of deaf people, including deaf children.

Schools wishing to take part are invited to register their interest via www.sign2sing.org.uk.
