Yeovil's new £817,000 artificial grass pitch is on track to be opened at the beginning of June 2013.

Construction work started on the large-scale project at Yeovil Recreation Centre earlier this week.

The 102m by 70m artificial pitch will be located at the bottom end of the Recreation Centre and will be open to all the community.

Complete with floodlights, the pitch will be suitable for hockey, recreational football tennis and netball.

South Somerset District Council secured funding for the £817,000 project after a successful application to England Hockey Board, securing developer funding from Barratt Homes and capital funding from the council itself.

The pitch is expected to be constructed through Spring ready for completion and opening at the beginning of June 2013.

Councillor Sylvia Seal, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at South Somerset District Council commented, "This really does promise to be a true community facility.

"During the daytime the pitch will be available for use by local schools and Yeovil College, whilst also being available for a range of other sports.

She added: "Enhancing facility provision with facilities such as this can only help to drive up participation and performance levels in community sport."

He added: "Yeovil is set to have one of the finest artificial grass pitches in Somerset."

Sherborne Hockey Club is already set to base its teams at the new pitch after continued work with the council.

Keith Walters, Chairman for the club, said: "This exciting facility will provide an ideal platform for Yeovil and Sherborne Hockey Club to develop grass roots hockey in the community.

"It will also support their senior sides to achieve even greater success in the future."

Alex Teasdale, National Manager Clubs and Facilities at England Hockey Board, saidL "We are delighted that work has now started on this new facility and we look forward to seeing Yeovil and Sherborne Hockey Club return to Yeovil.

"With the increased interest in hockey as a result of London 2012, we hope to see many newcomers join in at the new facility."
