Town councillor, Jon Gleeson, has convinced the council to entertain the possibility of naming a Yeovil road or street after the Olympian, after the online crusade he started last August.
He proposes that the road should be called "Stanning Row".
Heather's mum, Mary Stanning, described the idea as "surreal" and said her daughter "won't believe it".
Mr Gleeson said: "Many great athletes, footballers and other sportsmen have been honoured in the past with the naming of a road.
"In Yeovil we name roads after helicopters so why not Olympians?
He says that because a number of new developments are being built around Yeovil over the next few years, the new roads and Streets will need naming anyway.
"What could be more fitting than a road being named after our own Yeovil-born Olympian?"
"I have no doubt we could find a suitable road to put in place a small recognition of this fantastic achievement."
Yeovil Parish Council will be bringing up the proposal in their October council meeting.
