After a range of fun activities last week, staff and students at Yeovil College have raised £1084 for the BBC's Children in Need campaign.

A group of Level 2 Childcare and Education students ran a 'guess the number of sweets' competition and wore fancy dress, while Level 1 students held three-legged races and a sponsored silence. Together they raised £240.

Level 3 Childcare and Education students Vicky Batley (19) of Somerton and Amber Greenham (18) of Gillingham baked and sold a selection of cakes and peppermint creams to raise £194.

Students on Foundation Learning courses also baked and sold homemade cakes as part of their café project, raising nearly £50 for Children in Need.

As well as making the cakes, the students also marketed the sale, producing posters and leaflets to promote the event.

First year Business students completing the Level 3 Extended Diploma sold pick 'n' mix sweets and held a coffee morning and cake sale. They supported the charity as part of their 'Developing Teams in Business' unit and have raised approximately £100 so far. A final total will be known later this week.

Meanwhile, the youngsters at the College's Children Centre Nursery also held several events. The children, aged from 8 months to four years, wore fancy dress, made biscuits and cakes and took part in a sponsored dance-a-thon.

They also had a 'guess Pudsey's birthday' competition and raised a total of £300. Last but by no means least, Electrical Technician Phil Mars took part in a sponsored chest and back wax, raising more than £200 from staff and supportive students.

He said: "I was originally going to do this two years ago, but I didn't get it sorted in time. This year, I thought 'I've got quite a lot of hair, it'll be fun, why not?'

"I've done a few different things for charity since I left the Navy in 1980. Children in Need is brilliant because it doesn't just help children in the UK, it also helps those overseas. The campaign also raises awareness among young people, which is a good thing."

James Hampton, Yeovil College's Principal said: "Yeovil College has a very strong tradition of fundraising for local, national and international causes and we're very proud of the effort our students and staff put into events such as Children in Need.

"In recent years, our students have supported charities including the Yeovil Night Shelter, Lord's Larder, Friends of Somerset Young Carers, Comic Relief and Operation Christmas Child.

"Our students' hard work for these and other organisations makes a real difference to people's lives and Yeovil College is very proud of their achievements."
