Sheltered accommodation in Yeovil was severely damaged by fire early this morning following a suspected arson attack at Hendford Hill.
Fire crews were called to a ground floor flat fire at around 3.30am by pedestrians concerned that a person might be inside.
On arrival they confirmed that the occupant was not in and this flat was used as sheltered accommodation, in the form of a hostel.
A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "This incident is now complete and after initial investigations led the crews to believe the fire was caused accidentally, from an electric scooter charging unit.
"It was later established that the fire is thought to have been started deliberately."
Severe smoke damage and moderate fire damage was caused to the flat and its contents. No-one was injured by the fire.
The duty of care was left with the site manager and Police.
