Anyone who finds that they're at a loose end this weekend might want to get involved in the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch.

All you need is a pen, some paper and a spare hour to while away in your garden or local park, where your sharp-eyed observations could help the RSPB collect the data they need on our native bird species.

They want as many people as possible throughout Britain to make note of the highest number of each bird species seen on the ground, reporting any findings back to the website.

You can even take part in more organised local events, closest to us is the Big Wetland Duck Watch in West Sedgemore and the Big Garden Birdwatch at Radipole Lake. All the events are family friendly and a welcome excuse to be out in the great wide open.

Happy twitching yeovilpeople!
